I am a retired professional classical musician who hails originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, wherein I now live and work. Having attended the Cincinnati Public Schools, and graduated from Western Hills High School, I attended the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. There I acquired a bachelor of Music Degree in Double Bass Performance. In 1986, I moved to Austin, Texas, where I attended the University of Texas School of Music, acquiring a Master of Music Degree in Double Bass Performance in May of 1991. I worked in Austin as a free lance musician - was a tenured member of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, and the Austin Lyric opera Orchestra. I began working at the UT School of Music as a member of the staff in May of 1997.
During my 23 years in Austin, I studied European and American History, Music History, and the History of Film Music with the likes of Elliot Antokloetz, Charles Roeckle,Charters Wynn, Judith Coffin, and Bruce Hunt. I also wrote about the history of film working with Jon J. Muth on his graphic realization of Fritz Lang's film "M". While happily working with the UT String Project, Directed by Prof. Phyllis Young, Susan Walllace, Christi Crookall, Jessica Gulliam Valls and Dr. Laurie Scott, I continued to write and study History with the University History Society. I returned to Cincinnati in February of 2009 in order to be nearer to my heroes - my mother Norma Bolten, and my father John Bolten, both of them proud members of "the "Greatest Generation." I continue to free lance at music and write about history in the Cincinnati area to this day, whilst happily voluteering my time at "Crossroads" Community Church wherein I occassionally do some of my research.... on the wonderful computers which they provide in the atrium....along with free coffee! TRULY a community center!!
